Fresh Faced at Alkali in Putney

Lorraine Crighton-Smith prepares for the new season by getting scrubbed and polished at Putney’s Alkali Aesthetics & Wellbeing
Tucked away on the Upper Richmond Road, sharing its front door with The Pilates Room, is Alkali Aesthetics & Wellbeing. Alkali landed in SW15 last summer so, ahead of the festive party season, I was eager to check it out.
Its positioning alongside The Pilates Room is no coincidence, as Alkali aims to encourage an altogether healthier approach to life. While the team are more than capable of covering up all manner of skincare and dental sins, Dr Aalok Y Shukla – Alkali’s founder – points out that prevention is key to achieving the best results.
On arrival at the state-of-the-art clinic I was greeted by skin therapist Lauren Spiby, who asked me to fill out a quick questionnaire and a consent form. First stop was Dr Shukla’s office for the initial consultation where we discussed my skin and teeth before deciding on the Refresh programme – a combination of jet-wash teeth cleaning and medical microdermabrasion plus Alkali’s Gleam teeth-whitening treatment.
Next up, a mould of my mouth was taken for the teeth whitening programme, which works by whitening the teeth from the inside out. Using the specially-formulated treatment in the mould, for a minimum of three hours a day, certainly serves to create a bright, white smile. Teeth whitening comes with a warning though – it can cause sensitivity, and
I wasn’t immune. Using a sensitive toothpaste in place of the treatment every other night can soothe the sensitivity – and the results were impetus enough to continue with the course.
Finishing off the programme was
the medical microdermabrasion –
a non-surgical means of skin rejuvenation, using crystals to perform a deep exfoliation of the skin. A machine is used to distribute the crystals on your skin, using a sucking motion to stimulate your skin’s natural production of collagen and elastin. While it’s chemical free, watch out for redness immediately after the treatment and be careful to wear sunscreen on your face for the next ten days. I was able to return to the office after my first treatment – any redness concealed by Alkali’s offering of mineral make-up.
Not only can medical microdermabrasion clear up blocked pores and break outs but, used regularly, it can help eliminate fine lines and wrinkles. I’ve since returned for a second treatment and my skin certainly looks and feels rejuvenated. The team are friendly and professional, without a doubt, the clinic itself is inviting and the results speak for themselves. Ten per cent of Alkali’s profits are donated to health and education causes in India.
